Energetic Kick-Off
The FIRST organization will launch the Lego League, taking place in Israel for the fourth year, on Wednesday, December 5. Fifty teams from all over the country signed up for the league this year, including groups from Tel Aviv, Arad, Tamra, Haifa, Herzliya, Misgav and Baka al-Gharbiya. The motto of this year’s competition will be “The Riddle of Energy – Meeting World Standards.”
FIRST’s Lego league is an international robotics program conducted with the Lego group. The league is for students ages 9-14 and is made of groups of 4-10 members who fill roles in a similar model to an industry structure. The students use Lego blocks, sensors, motors, gears and a sophisticated control interface to build and plan an autonomic robot that can carry out various tasks while moving in a defined space.
The challenge is based on a series of global problems and is made of two parts: first is building a robot to complete the robot challenge and the second is studying and solving a real global problem facing scientists and presenting the solution. Every year the national final is held at the Yad Eliyahu sports arena and the first-place winners represent Israel in the world championship in Atlanta, while the second-place winners represent Israel at the European contest in Norway.
FIRST (www.usfirst.org) is a nonprofit organization that operates in the US, Canada, Brazil, Britain and Israel. The organization offers motivation and access to technology and science studies among youngsters through robotics. One of the focuses of FIRST’s activity is the FLL contest.
